Civic copper with sunface / Urumi 1217 AH
« on: November 18, 2020, 02:04:02 PM »
31-33mm / 16,45g
This is a large copper coin, not to much easy to identify... (but identifiable  ;))
"zarb" is expected at bottom but the lower characters are puzzling for me : it seems to me that there are neither "zar" of "zarb" nor digits of a date ?

Looking at this one i would only guess Iran rather than Afghanistan. On the sunface side there could be signs of an overstrike.
Is there a small "Zarb" above "falus" ?

I did not indicate the mintname to add a little spice...
You are right, Anthony, it's well an iranian copper and I think too that the sunface side shows trace of overstriking.
At top, above the word "falus" it's the mintname; the lower part is unfortunately erased and I don't manage to read it.   I haven't been able to find a similar type which could give a clue.

Urumi :" ارومی "
The mintname is at top.
The particularity for this mint is that the initial "alif" is very often placed at end, inside the loop of the "sin" of "falus". see hereafter this example from Valentine.
Here, I agree, it isn't very clear  :-\ , only a trace of "alif" is visible at left... other letters are more legible.

Thank you Anthony, I readily admit having searched a lot too  ::)
With a good sunlight, I think that it is now possible to read a date at bottom : 1217 .

When you go back in time again, please tell the die sinkers that it's OK to do calligraphy, but if they want someone else, say one or two centuries later, to read what they wrote, they might as well put those little loops in the right place  ;)

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Thank you Saro, nice work on the Urumi copper coin; attached is another example, part of the date is shown at 5 O'clock " 4 ۴ ".

Thank you Maythem; it's my turn not to see the digit  :-\, I only see a small branch..

from different sources, I have seen Urumi coppers with : horse,  colt,  peacock, bird (flying or not), turtle, lio alone, lion & sun, lion attacking a gazelle, dragon, ornamental pomegranateand no design.... but I have been unable to find one with a sunface.

Thank you Saro, you are right about such coins not having a sunface. As for the digit " 4 ۴ ", yes it looks like a small branch.
