Civic copper of Rasht with couplet
« on: November 14, 2020, 05:52:45 PM »
16,45g / 26-28mm
This large civic copper of Rasht mint, undated, has been likely struck under the Qajars in years 1240-50 AH.
There is no design on  reverse but a somewhat shortened poetic sentence  " عز من قنع  ذل  طمع  " ( in fact not very easy to decipher ...:)
The full text should be : "  عز من قنع و ذل من طمع  " / " the  All Mighty satisfies me and  greed humiliates me "
This popular sentence is often found on various calligraphic supports.
This coin could have been struck in same years as this one

This coin is interesting by its calligraphy : letters  " ن and ع "  of " من قنع"are melted as well as" ط" and " ع" of " ذل  طمع ".

coin is listed by Valentine (n° 70 & 72 p.139)  with the mention for reverse : "inscription unread" , done today  :)

With your explanation and transcription it becomes clear. But this is a real challenge to start. :applause:

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Thank you both, Anthony and Peter  :)
this calligraphic's style is to be compared to this one where the words "falus" and "Balkh" are similarly melted.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have been struck at same periods.

The other one is nice, but more straightforward (I might have recognized that one). This one takes the idea to a next level of complexity!
