Searching on eBay some Gibraltar 2020 coins (still missing first 4 from Hercules series) I noticed new Gibraltar coin 50p with Coat of Arms on obverse.
Issued to commemorate 80 years of Commandos in Gibraltar.
Coin is silver plated, proof finish, mintage 8000. I don't know where is produced but maybe the same case as Covid coin.

As the obverse is without Elizabeth II this coin is out of scope of my interest but I see that so far no info about on this forum so I wrote this post.

That made me curious. Here you see the obverse design: the coat of arms. Is Gibraltar planning independence from the Uk I wonder?  >:D

Is this the first such coin without the Queen's portrait?

Gibraltar for the first time issued a modern coin that did not depict Queen Elizabeth II back in 2017. Since this year more coins of Gibraltar are being issued without it. The absence of the portrait on the coins caused that several politicians recently asked questions about this in the parliament of Gibraltar. I wrote about that here. The answers to these questions offered an interesting insight in the reasons behind the decision to not use the portrait on some of their coins.

The quality is very poor so that indeed may well be the case.
The coin will not be released into general circulation and does not meet the technical specifications of normal 50 pence coins (it is made of an abnormal alloy). It is therefore that I decided not to write about it myself, though of course a topic about it is more than welcome.
