I have been looking out for coins of Kheda mint of IPS Baroda, ever since I first read about the mint in the Gazetteer. Recently I saw this coin in one of the auctions in India described as : Anand Rao, Silver Rupee, 11.4g, Sankheda Mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, Nagari initial 'Aa' on rev., with a substantial portion of the mint name visible, unlisted in KM. Very Fine+, Rare.

My instincts told me that this was not Sankheda. So what would that be? No coins of Kheda mint had yet been confirmed in the public domain. WoC member and an expert on Indian and specially Maratha coins, Mr. Shailen Bhandare came to my aid. He confirmed that this was indeed a coin of Kheda and not Sankheda.

Though I had to pay through my nose, I ensured that the coin did not slip through my hands.

May your nose heal quickly :) and may you long enjoy the result of your long chase. Congratulations, Amit. We all know what it is like to catch a coin we wanted for so long. BTW a very nicely preserved coin!

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Thanks Peter. I am enjoying the fruits of the bloody nose.......... In fact, I think I enjoyed the chase. From a time when some experts denied the existence of the mint to actually finding a coin of such a mint............. Normally, one finds a coin and then traces a place where the mint could have been................ but here, there were records of the coin having been struck at this mint but no coin that could have been attributed to having been minted there.............That was fun.
