Thanks Seeker, however the surface of this coin does not appear right?

You can interpret the surface in two ways:

  • A worn coin that was covered in some kind of crud that was cleaned away. The pitting is where the crud was reacting with the metal.
  • A badly cast copy. The pitting is the result of trapped air bubbles
I am in favour of the first explanation. First, the pitting is distributed unevenly over a small area. At least in theory, trapped air bubbles should be everywhere. Second, a modern forger would make a better looking coin and would have trouble making the crack in a cast coin.
