Looks like we are going to have one more limited edition €2 coin from Belgium, commemorating Jan van Eyck, a famous Belgian painter. 150,000 BU coin cards will be issued - not too sure if a circulation version is also planned.

A silver collector €10 coin is also planned, with the same theme but a different design.

The portrait used on €2 commemorative reminds me of Professor Quirrell from Harry Potter and Philosopher's Stone movie. ;D

The two designs are fine, but I wonder whether the €10 piece can actually "capture" the painting. What I find intriguing about the Arnolfini portrait is the mirror in the background, and what it shows. Try that on a coin ...

Imagine the same coins which show only his paintings and his name but not his portrait. That sounds more logical, right? I think they should have concentrated more on his paintings and not his own portrait...

When an artist is commemorated on a coin, picking a famous and/or characteristic work of art is definitely a legitimate approach. In this case, well, Jan van Eyck did make several paintings that are probably self-portraits, such as the one on the €2 design. Two birds with one stone etc. ...

As for the €10 piece, van Eyck might be one of the persons in the mirror. He is not the groom though. :)
