De La Rue is extremely desperate. For some reason they seem to have the support of almost the entire industry.

I contacted mr Omtatah some time ago with a few questions but he did not bother to reply.

After Mr Omtatah, De La Rue and De La Rue Kenya EPZ Ltd, now Swedish currency manufacturer Crane AB has also sued the Central Bank of Kenya. They say they quoted the best price and therefore demand that the tender is being awarded to them immediately.  :)

Okiya Omtatah and Swedish currency printer Crane AB won the case against the Central Bank of Kenya. The judge last week declared the awarding of the currency printing tender by Central Bank Kenya to De La Rue, null and void. The judge has ordered Central Bank Kenya to re-evaluate all bids and to make a new decision. Central Bank Kenya has announced that they will appeal the decision of the court.

For the sake of completeness, Crane AB is a subsidiary of Crane & Co Inc., a US company that holds a de facto monopoly on printing US banknotes, which is often seen as an implicit state subsidy of the US company.

Before 2002, Crane AB was known as AB Tumba Bruk, established in 1755 in Tumba.

Doesn't the BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING actually print the US banknotes while Crane supplies the ''paper'' only?

You are right, but it doesn't change the train of thought.

As Bimat posted earlier today, the Court of Appeal has yesterday decided that the Central Bank of Kenya did not commit collusion in awarding the currency printing tender to De La Rue. The Central Bank is now going to reschedule the issuance of the new currency and is looking to issue it as soon as possible. Hopefully we will soon at long last get to see the new coins.

Activist Okiya Omtatah has appealed the decision of the Court of Appeal, the case has now been referred to the Supreme Court.

I contacted Omtatah earlier but he declined to comment.
