Here are some planned designs of 2008 for a new Congolese franc. No coins were ever issued with these designs, but they were provisionally intended for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa). Presumably they would have been minted by the Royal Mint of Belgium.

Presumably the image shows artwork rather than struck trial pieces. The okapi design would have been a first for a circulation coin, though it has appeared on a few collector coins, and leopards are still not commonly seen on circulation coins. Sadly, lion, elephant and antelope designs are all too common on African coins nowadays, so it is difficult to make such designs look especially distinctive. However, the country has over 200 ethnic groups, so perhaps animals are seen as a neutral choice.

Thanks for the news and image <k> ... I can remember that the Moroccan Mint were also working in this project, I saw a couple of different coin series designs, both with the same characteristics (bimetallic 100F, copper 5F etc.)
