So Nepal has announced that it will issue coins of 1 rupee and 2 rupees that depict a new map of Nepal. I have searched for some background information for this decision. In June, Nepal unveiled a new map of its country that includes the Limpiyadhura-Kalapani-Lipulekh area. This area of 370 square kilometres has been administered by India for a long time but Nepal claims that under the Sugauli Treaty of 1815, the piece of land is its possession and wants it to be returned.
In 1991 a panel was formed that identified contested areas and decided whether they belonged to India or Nepal. 90% of all problems were solved this way but the problem of the Limpiyadhura-Kalapani-Lipulekh area remained unsolved.
Although the area under the Sugauli Treaty of 1815 indeed officially belongs to Nepal, only after it has been administered by India for almost 200 years, Nepal made a claim. This makes the situation complicated.
