2 pound Shakespeare (Tragedies) Royal Mint error
« on: August 06, 2020, 12:02:35 AM »
A part of the 2016-dated Shakespeare (Tragedies) 2 pound coins have been minted on incorrect blanks. The correct coins should have the edge lettering "What a piece of work is a man". A part of the coins however has the edge lettering "For king and country", which means that they were mistakenly minted on blanks of the 2016-dated World War I 2 pound coin.

2 pieces have so far been discovered with more expected to be found soon as this information has only today been published widely. Although the coin was first released into circulation in 2016, only now this error has been discovered. This is likely because a significant part of the mintage has only recently been released into circulation.

The Royal Mint has been asked to comment on this and to provide further information on how many pieces were affected by the error.

The first piece was found in Newcastle, the second in Whitehaven so it seems the error batch was released into circulation in the middle of the UK.

I can hear the sound of eBay merchants flocking to the North East and North West as we speak...

I suppose with so many commemoratives being produced these days that this kind of thing is inevitable, but it does still suggest a lack of quality control.

2 further pieces have today been reported. They were found in circulation in Broxburn. This brings the total to 4.

This is getting interesting now and I guess the rest of us need to learn to check the edge inscriptions on £2 coins that we handle so we don't miss finding errors like this.

A total of 17 pieces have now been reported as having been found. The error pieces appear to have been released in and around Whitehaven, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Middlesbrough. Although a few pieces were found elsewhere, it is thought these travelled with holidaymakers etc. A map of the current finds can be found here.

A blue marker means 1 find, a red marker means 2 pieces were found in the particular place. Almost all reports have been verified. A few pieces of which the location is not yet known are missing on the map.

For the first time pieces were sold today. They sold for respectively 28, 55, 200 and 230 pounds.

31 pieces have now been reported. All but 1 report have been verified. Based on the map it is clear that the pieces were released in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Middlesborough. Some pieces were found across Cumbria but it has become unclear if there was a release there or whether the pieces ended up there from circulation. The map has now been completely updated. It works best on desktop version, as you can then see the various layers and the meaning of the different colours.

Of the 31 pieces that have so far been reported at least 12 are currently up for sale or have already been sold. The pieces that were sold, sold for 28, 55, 200, 230 and 230 pounds.

Somewhat to my surprise several sealed bags were found that had 8 or 9 correct pieces in them and only 1 or 2 pieces with the wrong edge inscription.

The Royal Mint does not know how many coins with the error exist. It is also not able to provide an estimate.
