MURAD BAKHSH - SURAT RUPEE !!!
« on: July 28, 2020, 12:42:05 AM »
Murad Bakhsh, Rupee of Surat AH 1068 (1658 AD) the youngest son of Emperor Shah Jahan. He colluded with his elder brother Aurangzeb to defeat the heir of Shah Jahan, Dara Shikoh.
He was executed on the order of Aurangzeb in the Gwalior Fort.

I visited the Gwalior Fort in 2018, and the fort ASI ( Archaeology Survey of India) officer told me that Murad was imprisoned and executed in the basement of Mannn Mandir ( Very colorful building).

Congratulations! Most excellent find of a coin from a very short reign. Also a great conversation piece: how a system of inheriting led to ruthless family killings, betrayal, civil war and weakening of the empire.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
