Below you see the obverse of the 5 korun, another nickel-plated steel coin.

The style of the lion, the fonts and the placement of the different elements on the obverse help to make a more lively series.

The reverse of the 5 korun coin features a stylised version of the Charles Bridge and the Vltava river in Prague, along with a small linden leaf.

This charming design is based on similar designs featured on Czechoslovak coins of the 1930s.

The 10 korun coin is made of copper-plated steel.

The reverse depicts the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in the city of Brno.

The initials of designer Ladislav Kozák appear in the exergue.

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is located on the Petrov hill in the centre of the city of Brno in the Czech Republic. It is a national cultural monument and one of the most important pieces of architecture in South Moravia. The interior is mostly Baroque in style, while the impressive 84-metre-high towers were constructed to the Gothic Revival designs of the architect August Kirstein in 1904–5.

The 20 korun coin is made of brass-plated steel. It is tridecagonal, which means 13-sided.

The reverse of the 20 korun coin depicts Saint Wenceslas.

The legend translates as, 'Saint Wencelas, do not let us or any future persons perish'.


In life he was Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia, born circa 907, died 935.

The design is said to represent his statue in Prague, but, if so, it is not an accurate representation of the statue.

The 50 korun coin is bimetallic. It has a brass-plated steel center within a copper-plated steel ring.

This coin is currently the highest denomination in circulation.

The reverse features a cityscape of Prague and includes Charles Bridge and Saint Vitus's Cathedral, amongst other well known landmarks.

That ends my survey of the coinage. It is interesting to see all the variations of the lion, and especially of the two tails, which appear in different shapes and positions from coin to coin.

In that respect, the lion reminds me of the German eagle, which has appeared in many and various forms on the German coinage.
