Shah Jahan  Akbarabad AH 1047 RY 10

10.66 Gms. x 24.8 MM

With the central strike, it's still a worn-out coin.

Thanks!

Yes, there is wear on this coin, but it's not so bad. Two other factors affect the sharpness of the strike.

The coin seems to have spent a few centuries in agricultural land. It probably came out largely black and was lucky to have escaped the plow and other tools. It was eventually sold to a person who removed the black, likely with a sharp acid. This also dulled the letters and made the usual marks in the field of the design look "cramped", but it made the coin collectable. Also, when the coin was struck, the thickness of the flan was uneven. The die didn't hit the thinnest part, on the edge at 7 and 8 o'clock, with the same force as the rest of the coin, so it remained vague.

The thin area is quite common on Islamic coins. I have come the conclusion that they are a consequence of the minting method. The flans were struck hot. This means that they had to be transferred from a hot place to the minter's anvil. That probably meant picking them up with tongs. That is a delicate operation. Squeeze not hard enough and the flan falls out of the tongs, making several people of higher rank unhappy. Squeeze too hard and the tongs squeeze the flan, resulting in a thin part. This is partly undone by the strike, but important traces may remain. Note how it is much better too squeeze the tongs too hard than not hard enough.
