South Africa, 1 shilling, 1937.

South Africa, 10 cents, 1963.

When the shilling became 10 cents, night turned to day, and the star disappeared from the sky.  :)

The Irish pound coin of 1990. 'Punt' is Irish for 'pound'.

Ireland, 5 ecu, 1990.

The ecu stood for 'European Currency Unit'. Later the name 'euro' was chosen instead.

The 5 ecu was a collector coin only. Artist Thomas Ryan added a background of the hills in Kerry to his beautiful design.

South Africa, 2 cents, 1965 to 1990.  Wildebeest.

South Africa, 5 rand, 1990 to 2003.

2004 onward. The wildebeest stayed the same but the shape of the landscape changed.

In 2010 Gibraltar issued a penny with a Barbary partridge on the reverse design. This design was an amended version of the original penny design of 1988, except that the vegetation around the rim had been removed. The font used on the two designs is also different.

Compare the 2010 design with the original 1988 version.

Mozambique, 10,000 meticais, 2003.

Mozambique, 1 centavo, 2006.

Another example of background / no background on an animal design.

Michael Guilfoyle was responsible for both designs.

This is also an example of a design moving from the highest denomination to the lowest.

Botswana, 1 pula, 1981.  This design first appeared in 1976.

In 2014 Botswana released a new 1 pula coin (dated 2013).

In contrast to the earlier design, it has a rich and busy background.

I'd never noticed the mountains at the back of the Wildebeest had moved slightly.  Perhaps in the intervening years it had travelled a bit further.

Paraguay, gold 250 000 guaraníes collector coin of 1987.

Paraguay, 500 guaraníes, 1997.  One-year type only.

Paraguay, 500 guaraníes, 1997.

Paraguay, silver 1 guaraní commemorative collector coin, 2002.

In the third example, part of the original design was obscured in order to present the denomination more clearly.

The second example, with more design details, was dropped, and it was a one-year type only.

Slovakia, 50 halierov, 1993. The aluminium coin depicted the ruins of Devín castle.

From 1996 onward, the 50 halierov was minted in copper-plated steel.

It gained some extra details.
