Another Akbar dam
« on: June 19, 2020, 11:19:05 PM »
Another one for attribution. Again the calligraphy seems to make it an Akbar coin.
I see a date as 99x (if I'm not mistaken) but no clue about any additional details. Please help identify the mint & how to begin to 'read' these coins.

Thanks!

Please mention weight.

These Akbar coppers are often attributed to Narnaul or Bairata mint but most likely are later issues. A look at its weight may be of help.

The weight is 20.45g - how does the weight help in the attribution of the mint?
Did the coins of the period have such a high sensitivity to allow for comparisons based on <1g of weight difference?

Also, what is likely to be the third digit of the AH date? (99x?)

Thanks for your help!

The later issues were slightly lighter.

Well, yes. The Indian marketplace was highly skilled and in later times, the copper coins changed hands based on weight - they did not have a fixed monetary value as we see for coins today.

Also, what is likely to be the third digit of the AH date? (99x?)
Probably a 9 or a 6.
