I use Pic Resize which is a free service for resizing and editing pictures. It's a little limited as far as editing goes, but does a wonderful job with the resizing. They have a premium edition too, but there's a fee attached to that.

Go on the site and experiment with some random pictures to see how they come out. It's not difficult after you've done a few. There are other sites too, but this one works well for me.
