Another striking Qarakhanid fals, Kushani 413 AH
« on: April 11, 2020, 06:34:51 PM »
This fals is remarkable, for me, because of the use of Kufic script as well as a cursive Arabic script with big lettering on the reverse.
I'd like to know where the town of al-Kushani was to be found - a curious name. And can you help deciphering this coin?

Qarakhanid AE fals, al-Kushani, 413/ 1011. Mansur b. 'Ali as Arslan Khan + Ahmad b. al-Hasan. 25 mm, 3.05 gr. Album 3351, Kochnev 593. Zeno 15848.

Interesting and elegant specimen. To my amazement the left side is fairly easily readable to me. But to prevent overconfidence, the right side is hard again.
On the left in the center : "Allah / Arslan Khan / Ahmad bin al-Hasan"
In the margin the kalima starting slightly left of 12 o'clock : "La illaha illa Allah, wahadu la sherik lahu, Muhammad Rasul Allah"

Kushani should have been located somewhere between Samarqand and Bukhara ?

The right-side image is not a cursive Arabic script. It is 'Arslan Khan' in Uyghur language.

If the script is Uygur (North China), the mint is not in present-day Uzbekistan (South-West of China).

I just discovered I had earlier bought a coin of Kushani 413H. Is it exactly the same type?
24.5 mm, 2.60 gr.

I believe al-Kushani is Kesh, now Shahrisabz in Uzbekistan. Shahrisabz - Wikipedia

The last coin shown seems to be the same type, though the inscriptions were easier to read on the first.
