Maximian...maybe
« on: March 24, 2020, 07:24:53 PM »
This is a very rough coin but the closest I can find for a match is Maximian (A.D. 294-295, though total was 286-310 with a break around 307).  Reverse looks to be the bust of Hermanubis.  Not sure do to the condition, though.  Billon I think, 27g and 32mm (big coin).

No, it is far too heavy to be as late as Maximian I, his tetradrachms are about 7-8 grams.

I am uncertain of the emperor, but I think it is probably Titus (or possibly Vespasian or even Domitian) and at that weight must be a bronze hemidrachm. I'm afraid I can't identify the person on the reverse at the moment.

I agree.  This thing is a monster!...nothing matches :-(  Later coins were lighter due to lack of medal so I think this one is much older than I was thinking.  Still searching!  Update...I think it's a Nero but I've not been able to nail it down...such a large coin!
