Civic Copper with scales an Lion attacking a deer
« on: March 23, 2020, 08:48:15 PM »
I find this one fascinating.
It combines two not very common designs: a pair of scales and a lion attacking a deer.
The design of the loot with the head on the floor is very lifelike.
Unfortunately the mint which seems to be in a cartouche between the scales in worn out.
Size: 23mm
Weight: 8.67gr

I find this one fascinating.

Fascinating is the good word ! and puzzling too ...
both designs of scales and lion attacking a deer are different from others found on various civic coppers.
Scales or lion attacking an animal are somewhat common as reverse design but, till now, are never found both.
I have gathered the mints which have used these designs (most probably not comprehensive)

Scales (usually with the word 'adl in center):
Behbehan, Isfahan, Rasht,Shiraz, Yazd

Lion attacking an animal (deer, gazelle):
Kashan, Rasht, Sari, Shiraz, Qom, Teheran, Yazd

Rasht, Shiraz and Yazd have used both, may be one of them could have struck this coin ???

One thing is quite certain : it's a scarce and nice coin  :applause:

The scales with "adl" are an imitation of EIC Bombay coppers e.g. 1791, 1794. I would expect that this design would be well known in port cities, especially in the East of Iran. HTH.
