Sudan, The Khalifa, 20 piastres 1311
« on: March 15, 2020, 01:27:08 PM »
In http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,8373.0.html Afrasi showed three varieties of the 1311 dated coins with the 'regnal year' 11.

I have recently acquired a nice example of the variety without the 'regnal year' below the tughra, 21.12 gm, 35 mm.

20 Ghirsh umla jadida (= new money)
Azza Nasruhu (= May his Victory honoured!)
Omdurman
AH 1311 / - / -
20.52 g Billon

Nice. I am pretty sure they are from the same pair of dies too, which seems to happen quite frequently considering the dies for the coins were hand cut.

I have three specimens of the type with the '11', acquired over perhaps 25 years, which are die identical (and seemingly the same as the third one in the post I quoted). I attach an image of the best of them for you to please compare with yours.

Nice example with year 11 above sanat standing right. Here again my - comparing to yours - poor example:

20 Ghirsh umla jadida (= new money)
Azza Nasruhu (= May his victory be honoured!)
Omdurman
AH 1311 / 11 / - (variety 3: 11 above right tip of sanat)
19.95 g Billon
34.9 - 35.1 mm
KM #14

I think these both coins are struck with different dies.

I am sure the obverse dies are the same at least: I attach an enlargement of part of the crescent border, and if you look at the middle crescent there are faint lines extending down from it as if the punch was doubled, and I see the same on your coin.

I had to magnify my scan enormeous to see what you mean. Yes, now I think you are right. My suggestion would be: re-cut die.
