At the time when the mighty Kusana empire at its decline, many small states became independent in northern and central India. One of them is the Magha dynasty of Kaushambi. The first known ruler of this dynasty was Vashisthiputra Bhimasena (120 to 140 CE) and then his son Kautsiputra Pothasiri (140 to 170 CE). However as the timing shows, at that time Kushanas were at the top of their power. Hence the Maghas remained confined to their small area yet functioned as independent state near BaghelKhand near Bandhogarh.
By 155 CE, the heir-apparent Bhadra Magha have snatched Kaushambi from weakened Kushanas. So for some time Bhadra Magha  ruled Koshambi and Pothasiri ruled BandhoGarh concurrently .  Bhadra Magha succeeded Pothasiri on 170 CE but died on 175 CE. The next king was Gautomi Putra Shiva Magha who ruled from 175 to 184 CE. Shiva Magha issued  quite a number of currency but not much is known about him.
