Newly discovered mule 2 pounds 2014 WWI
« on: March 07, 2020, 12:43:12 AM »
Recently a new mule error has been discovered. The coin has been authenticated by The Royal Mint. An incorrect obverse die was used. It is the only known specimen. The piece will on 28 March be auctioned by Lockdales Auctioneers. More information on that can be found here.

Years ago a collector found the commemorative coin in his change and put it with his collection. Later he noticed the obverse of it differed from the other WWI 2 pound coins of 2014 in his collection. He thought the piece was fake. He then sought advise from several people one of which told him to send it to The Royal Mint, which he did. The Royal Mint wrote back that it was a genuine coin. They did not mention anything about the error. The piece was put back in the collection. Years later the collector was looking through his coins and came across this piece again. Having become more experienced he knew something wasn't right so he sent the piece once more to The Royal Mint Museum, where curator Chris Barker concluded that it was a mule error.

What an interesting story about a once-in-a-lifetime find.  I imagine it will fetch a pretty penny at auction.

Kitchener designs are somehow prone to mule errors at the Royal Mint.

The piece sold for 500 pounds (hammer price). On top of that the buyer will have to pay 18% buyer's premium and VAT.

I would have thought more than that for such a unique piece. Still, 500 pounds is a nice tidy sum.
