Our President Dollar sets will require another coin release to be added.

George H.W. and Barbara Bush, both of whom died in 2018, are to be featured on a Presidential dollar coin and a First Spouse medal and bullion coin

How does this work? Was the series finalised and is this a new thang altogether? Or is the series reopened especially for the elder Bushes? Or did the series always remain open for an ex-president who dies? And what if the dates of death of husband and wife are far apart?

As far as I know (and remember), the intial series has ended with Ronald Reagan.
Each new Dollar coin honouring a President needs to be newly authorized by Congress.

During the original series, the first lady's coin would have been issued alongside her husband's, even if she was still alive (Nancy Reagan almost was), but I don't know if they'd intentionally do that for an individual first lady who was definitely still alive.

According to this link the Nancy Reagan first spouse gold coin was released on the 1st of July 2016.

and I check several sources and she died on the 6th of March 2016.

So while the it was not issue for this release, living people have been put on other US coins (this link speaks about two that I know about - Who Can Be on a Coin?)

According to this link, any coin in the series after Reagan requires a new law to be passed.
