Faruksiyar Ahmadnagar copper falus AH.1127, RY.4
« on: January 07, 2020, 07:17:47 AM »
Here is my latest procurement of Jahangir coppers. A falus of Ahmadnagar weighing 13.43gms and with a diameter of 21.3mm, this retains some traces of both Hijri and regnal years.

obv. "(Jaha)ngir" bad(shah) and numeral "7" below horizontal line.
Rev. zarb"Ahmad nagar" above horizontal line and "sanah 4" below.

The legend arrangement looks different to me because usually "Ahmadnagar" is seen on the lower half and Jahangir on the upper half above the vertical line of the coin. Here, name of the ruler is on the lower half of obv and mint name is on the upper half of the rev.

Now about the date. With "7" on the obv, the possibilities are AH.1017,1027 and 1037. Goron and Goenka says that Jahangir issues of 1017 with legible date are found. No other dates ending in 7 are so far known for him. So it is AH.1017. The date "4" on the reverse can be 4,14 or 24. RY-4 of Jahangir falls in AH.1017. It can thus be presumed RY.4. So this issue should be of AH.1017, RY.4 of Jahangir.

Hello Dr Sreedhar,
For a particular mint, there is a specific style of legend and calligraphy for a given emperor. This is not a falus of Jahangir from Ahmednagar mint. The weight of 13.4 gm again suggest a later Mughal emperor. I have figured it out by looking at it carefully. But I would like you to take this up as a puzzle .
Clues- a) This is a later Mughal (after Aurangzeb)
b) the date 4 is ry of the ruler and the 7 besides 'bad'  is part of AH date.
c) last and most important clue is that emperor name is completely off flan
See if you can solve this out..  :D ::) ???

Yes Dr.Abhishek, you win.
I had posted this to zeno where Jan Lingen has corrected that to Farukhsiyar, AH.1127 RY.7. Thank you for the comments.
