Mughal Empire, Shah Jahan, Silver Rupee, 11.42g, Lahore, AH 1047 RY 10

A beautifully struck rupee with slight die shift upwards showing partial dotted borders at bottom. The Kalima within square area border (Obv) is in thick fonts in bold relief.

The AH date (Obv) is on right margin reading vertically up from bottom to top; the RY date (Rev) is at bottom just to the left of 'Zarb' (curved hook with  loop like character).

The Rev appears to have been a favorite target practice for the big boyz of trade viz shroff's / money-testers !

Shah Jahan to me is a sort of star-crossed Indian Romeo, having the exceptionally beautiful Taj Mahal built in Agra for his Juliet. This coin shakes that image. Shah Jahan in far-away Lahore, coming up with an austere, traditional coin type giving precedence to a religious text, bold lettering instead of swirling calligraphy surrounded by flowers, it doesn't fit the picture.

I presume the local mint masters had a degree of freedom and weight and silver content were first priority - as the shroff marks attest. Still, the complete contrast between this coin and the Taj Mahal is deafening.

I have a similar coin, maybe the engraver was the exact same, only this one was struck 2 years earlier than your coin.

There are no test marks. The dotted border is visible on one side. This coin was with soil (mud), currently, it's clean and parked inside the album :).
