Gibraltar: New circulating coins Island Games 2019
« on: November 29, 2019, 01:23:38 PM »
From July 6 up until July 12 the Island Games were held in Gibraltar.

Gibraltar Magazine wrote on 1 March 2019: "commemorative stamps and coins are being minted, as a collectable souvenir, and to circulate well after the Games are over."

The organisation wrote on 21 March 2019: "We are hoping to get permission from the Royal Mint to produce some coins for the games."

Why would they need permission from the Royal Mint?  They don’t even produce Gibraltar coins?

That is indeed an obvious question.

The 2019-dated standard circulating coins of Gibraltar will commemorate the Island Games. The coins are expected to be issued soon.

Unlike the previous 2 one-year-sets, this time each coin in the series will depict a different design. The coins depict logos of various sports that were used during the Island Games. The denomination on the coins will be depicted as only a figure. The 1 pound coin in the series will be round.

The 1 penny coin will depict the Swimming logo
The 2 pence coin will depict the Volleybal logo
The 5 pence coin will depict the Athletics logo
The 10 pence coin will depict the Table Tennis logo
The 20 pence coin will depict the Triathlon logo
The 50 pence coin will depict the Sailing logo
The 1 pound coin will depict the Tennis logo
The 2 pound coin will depict the Cycling logo

Several of the other sports on the Island Games, namely: Basketball, Judo, Shooting, Squash and Ten pin bowling were not chosen to be depicted on a coin.

There are now images of the 50p, 1 pound and 2 pound coins of this series. They look better than I had expected.

I am surprised <k> has not yet complained about the inconsistency in the way in which the denominations have been depicted. 50, £1 and two pounds.

I've been too busy reading doom sites. At least you've noticed those characteristics and can mention them when you come to finish the Gibraltar milestones topic.

Nowadays, I think it is a very smart idea to issue the commemorative coins only AFTER the event has taken place.

Eurocoin, I'm not happy with the beads on the obverse of the 2 pound coin. They're outmoded now. You need to tell your contacts to withdraw these coins and get somebody to scrape the beads off.

The beads on the obverse of the 2 pound coin are misaligned. Is this another Tower Mint product?

I do not think the beads are a major problem. Many people do not like the portrait so maybe there just needs to be a complete redesign of the obverses.

The coins were produced at Pobjoy Mint.
