It appears that Akbar issued half rupees of this form in Lahore as well.

My personal belief is that for all rupees there have to be the Half Rupees and most probably the quarter rupees. Un fortunately, the fractions have not survived.
I was given to understand that these were the first casualties for melting. A jeweler needing to add a small quantity of silver would find it very easy to add 5.5 g, 2,8 g or 1.4 / 1.5 g - fairly accurately, to make the actual total weight required rather than cutting it out from a larger chunk of silver. For example, to make a 100 g item, he took a blocks of silver (aprox  100 g) and the weight came to 105 g. He chopped of a part of the material and now it weighed 97. 4 g. To arrive to the exact weight he would have to keep repeating this or just use a 1/4 anna to add the missing weight. It would reduce his labour and time. Not too long back, fractions were also placed on the body placed on the funeral pyre.
