Kew Gardens 50p's used for Olympic Games novelties

Yesterday members of coin groups discovered that 50p coins on which a resin was applied with a specific image to be sold as novelties for the 2012 Olympic Games in fact are all Kew Gardens 50p coins. The coins were at the time sold by a company in Germany which had applied the resin to them. Dozens of collectors who happened to have the coloured piece with the specific image that can be seen below have taken the colour off of it.

Further research has now been done and this has proven that the other coins with decals in this series too were all Kew Gardens 50p coins. This means that upto 50,000 or more of the total of 210,000 Kew Gardens 50p coins that were minted in UNC quality were sent to the German branch of coin dealer Sir Rowland Hill which applied the decals on them.

A precise figure has now been established. 2012 of these sets were issued, each set containing 24 coins meaning that 48,288 Kew Gardens 50p coins were made into novelties by Sir Rowland Hill. Almost a quarter of the total mintage of the Kew Gardens 50p coin minted for general circulation.

Scandal! Somebody must have decided to give a quarter of the whole limited issue to a single dealer. Questionable independently from how they would be distributed.

After numerous coins had been checked, all of which were found to be Kew Gardens 50p coins, for the first time it was found that a piece with the Olympic Games decal on it was not a Kew 50p. Instead the particular coin was a 2010-dated Girlsguides 50p.
