Jamaica: Norman Manley on the 5 dollar coin
« on: October 19, 2015, 12:09:40 AM »
Norman Manley (1893-1969) was Prime Minister of Jamaica from 1959 to 1962.

His full face portrait appeared on the 5 dollar collector coin of 1971. This coin was produced by the Franklin Mint. I am grateful to David Cornell, who was Director of Art at Franklin Mint at the time, for providing me with the name of the designer of this portrait. It was the English sculptor and coin designer, Philip Nathan.

Unfortunately, Mr Manley's widow did not like this fine portrait. A new portrait was designed by Franklin Mint sculptor Ernest Lauser, and it appeared on the standard 5 collector coin, issued in proof sets, from 1972 onwards.

My wife found this 5 Dollar Jamaican coin near a CoinStar machine in a local grocery store recently. I hadn't seen this design before although I new something of Manley. An interesting addition to my "found collection".

Here's some information I came across online about the series.
