As expected, the government of Gibraltar will this year issue a commemorative 50 pence coin for Christmas.

Is it meant to circulate?

Dale

Yes, it will be released into circulation in Gibraltar.

Image of the coin. It will also be released in a coloured edition in copper-nickel.

Coloured version already avaliable on Pobjoy Mint website with shipping avaliable from next Monday.

If you have a circular inscription on either side, is it so hard to make them match in style? ;)  Besides, I am wondering what the "TM" refers to. Is that Raymond Briggs's Father Christmas, or somebody else's?

Indeed... see here

Last year was the similiar situation, Father Xmas with TM sign.

Neither for the design nor for the words "Father Christmas" does there exist a trademark so its inclusion seems to be pointless, although I have seen this happen more frequently and it is not illegal to use the symbol without registration. The design was indeed made by Raymond Briggs though.

Thanks for the information. :) Such trademarks are usually limited to specific uses or purposes only, so the mere words "Father Christmas" on a coin would be OK, I suppose. But yeah, if that is the Briggs Santa ...
