1967 JFK

I've had this coin for a long time.  1967 Philadelphia mint JFK Half Dollar in almost MS condition.  I have several other dates but this was the first JFK I acquired as a kid.  There are two types based on the Ts in the word STATES.  Type I has the first T top slanted and type II is not.  Fewer Type I were minted.  This one is a type II.

While I like the obverse design, the eagle looks awkward to me. Overall they're a nice impressive coin though.

i always liked the coin and over the years have put together several complete sets none of which I have today.
Two of the sets i put together I included proofs and one set (I forget which) was stolen in the early 1980's.

These days I tend to buy the annual mint sets and not break the coins out so i have complete sets from 1964 but not separated into series.
I do think I have missed the last three years of mint sets though.

Separately, I also put together a complete set of Washington Quarters (no proofs) since 1964 and maybe 35 of the silver ones all in MS.
I still have that one and a complete set of Jefferson Nickels in MS and a circulated set of Roosevelt  silver dimes.

Never did look for sub-types much.

I agree, the eagle on JFK is pretty lame.  One of my favorites...Ike Dollar (this is a '72 reverse).  Two types, hard print and soft, this is a soft print and is less common.  Now that is an eagle :-) Susan B Anthony Dollar used the same reverse.  That is a '79 SBA reverse (lower photo).  See the difference in the stamp.

The JFK got that reverse because the coin design was a rush job.  It is pretty much a copy of the presidential seal.
I think that was Gilroy Roberts who did that coin.

Dale, you are correct.  1964s were Frank Gasparro and 1965 to '67th were Frank Gasparro.  '76 was way different on the reverse by Seth Huntington.  Crazy information but fun 😎 (referring to the the JFK half Dollar).  If I recall correctly GR did the face.

I had quite a few Kennedy's, but never attempted to complete a set. I never had the patience to work towards complete sets of anything...a little short on money too.

While I had series that I liked better than others, I would buy things that I was attracted to. I had a wide variety of material including early bust silver, half cents (my favorites), Civil War tokens, counterstamps, 20th century errors (1955 DD Lincoln. 3-legged Buffalo, etc.) and others. A well rounded collection, but unfocused. After I sold my collection a number of years ago, I kept my counterstamps and some tokens and have concentrated in those areas since.

It sounds like you have an impressive collection of coins, Dale. Congratulations.

Unfortunately I have "had" an impressive collection or two over the years. Not so much these days.
These days when I collect I am more interested in diversity than extra nice coins.

Back years ago I often took a different direction than you did. Back then I was a 'completest" and only collected coins from series I could afford to complete and not the coins that most attracted me. I have since almost overcome that mental disability and don't mind incomplete sets too much. I do remember agonizing for months over the purchase of the 1970-D JFK as it was $40 at the time. Ouch! It certainly didn't maintain its value. Now you can buy the entire 1970 mint set for half that unless it has the small date cent in it

Right now I am in one of those lulls and not really collecting much of anything. It comes and goes.
I also find that a well circulated coin brings me as much pleasure or more so than a pristine example.
My how times have changed.

I've been into coins from age 6.  I enjoy that my daughter started at age 4.  Her quote "Daddy, money should not be made out of paper!"  I happen to agree :-)  We have fun with it.
