Nice thought, Frizio. I like your solution of covering the back of the head with a sela, to indicate that it's more about music than about these people.

I am afraid that in practice, all 28 member states would want to have "their" national composer on the coin and the Germans and Austrians could rightly claim that they need more than one. The omission of Mozart would doubtless lead to AUxit while I doubt you would want to hear the music of the best Dutch composer. Music is supposed to unite, not divide. How about a single piece devoted to music without the composers? It's a bit of a challenge, but it can be done.

I am sure there are other themes as well. Why not? The problem is rather every member-state having its own national champion. This would be like those hyper-long, boring sets of US states, German Bundesländer, Russian and Polish oblasts and Channel island municipalities that equalise the unequal and provide little real information. If Ireland has a composer coin and Austria has a composer coin does that mean that the influence of both member-states on Western European music is the same? In what sense can California be compared one on one with Rhode Island? Why would anyone want to know the names of the Channel Island municipalities?

If the objective is to celebrate composing on an EU level - a worthy goal - pick the top composers who worked on what is now EU territories and forget about their nationality or concentrate on the concept of composing, rather than on composers.
