Where to find the British Overseas Territories on this forum
« on: August 21, 2019, 04:41:06 PM »

British Overseas Territories.

The British Overseas Territories are 14 territories under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of the United Kingdom. They are former colonies of the British Empire that either have not been granted independence or else have voted to remain British territories. Unlike the Crown Dependencies, which are located around the coast of Britain, the British Overseas Territories are scattered around the world.

This forum works largely on geographical principles. The British Overseas Territories, therefore, are assigned to the relevant geographical boards and do not have a board of their own. This topic is meant as an aid to locating the British Overseas Territories on this forum. It is posted here because readers sometimes visit this board, expecting to find some of the British Overseas Territories.

Note that topics about the British Overseas Territories are assigned to the most relevant geographical board. For instance, British Antarctic Territory is assigned to the Central and South America board, because there is no board for Antarctica on this forum. Bermuda is assigned to the Caribbean board, even though it is not located in the Caribbean, because culturally it is considered Caribbean and it is close to the Caribbean region.

The following topic places the British Overseas Territories in context and demonstrates how the Queen's effigy is used:

The Worldwide Usage of the Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II

Extract:

To understand how and why the Queen’s effigy is used throughout the world today, we must first look at the hierarchy of countries and territories of which Queen Elizabeth II is monarch.

These fall into four categories:

1] The United Kingdom.

2] The Crown Dependencies.

3] The British Overseas Territories.

4] The Commonwealth Realms.

The Queen also has a role as the Head of the Commonwealth.

This forum works largely on geographical principles.

Okay, understood.

The British Overseas Territories, therefore, are assigned to the relevant geographical boards and do not have a board of their own.

Still, it would be so much easier and much more convenient if they had their own board.

You could consider it the exception to rule #1  ;)

That would then confuse people looking for them in the geographical boards. My solution has been to create a few transnational topics such as these and place them in the UK boards. Maybe I should create a list of those topics at some point.

My rule # 1. You can't devise a classification scheme or a structure that doesn't confuse someone.

I have always found the structure here somewhat confusing.
Never the less most of the time I can find what I am looking for.
