Sarbadar 6 dirhams? - please confirm attribution
« on: July 14, 2019, 07:56:36 PM »
Dear members, please could you confirm, or correct, the attribution of this coin - I think it is a Sarbadar issue dated 759AH, mint Damghan. Weight is 4.34g. Would be grateful if someone could confirm I have read it correctly.
Many thanks
Michael

Certainly looks like Shia, post-Mongol Iran. Damghan mint is also what i read So, without references at the moment, i do think you could very well be correct!

Dear Michael, the date is shown in the margin of the second photo starting 12 O’clock anti-clockwise:
ضرب , zarb, struck
في , fi , in
شهريور , shahrivar, 6th month in Persian calendar
سنة , Sanah , year
تسع , tisa’ , nine
وخمسين , wa khamseen, and fifty
وسبعمائة , wa saba’mia, and seven hundred
Text: ضرب في شهريور سنة تسع وخمسين وسبعمائة , struck in the month of shahrivar, in the year 759

Coin collecting has a curious name. It is also called the "Hobby of Kings".

Could it be: ......ضرب فی شھور (struck in the months of the year ......... )
Instead of the month Shahrewar ?

Thank you shiblius, the word " Months شھور " is not relevant in this case. It is quite common to put the date starting with the month in many Islamic coins. This coin was minted in the Persian city of " Damghan دامغان " so putting the 6th month of the Persian calendar is appropriate.
