Has anyone ever seen a large size (23.6 mm) Gibraltar 5p of 1990? It is listed on Numista and Weltmünzkatalog but several numismatists, some of which located in Gibraltar, told me they had never seen it. Taya Pobjoy's catalog on Gibraltar coins does not mention anything about it either. It is also missing in the collection of our member SpaBreda.

Can't tell if this is a large coin or not, but it has the older portrait...

There are some 1990 Gibraltar BU coin sets on eBay and they only include the smaller version, not the large.  I'd therefore say it's unlikely that a large one exists.

That obverse in the photo Col posted is a Jersey 5p.  Gibraltar coins were introduced in 1988 with the Maklouf portrait.  Circulation coinage never carried the Machin portrait.  Unless it's a mule, that cannot be two sides of the same coin (not sure it could even be a mule as Gibraltar coins were Pobjoy-produced and Jersey's were the Royal Mint).

Apart from the obvious about the Jersey obverse that Alan has already mentioned, it looks to me as if the Gibraltar reverse is the small variety. If you compare the sizes of the two coins with the weave of the fabric they are sitting on, the Jersey coin looks larger. Or is it just an optical illusion?

Jersey didn't produce any large size 5p coins dated 1990 either, so they must be the same size (I think only Guernsey had the large size dated 1990, but that was only in sets alongside the smaller version, similar to the UK.  St Helena-Ascension and the Falklands were the only territories to still have the larger coins after 1990).

Ah, OK  :)

I'd got it into my head that Jersey had both, at least in sets, like the UK. Thanks for putting me straight!

No, just Guernsey.  In the three 1990s changeover years, Guernsey sets included both old and new size of 5p and 50p but not the 10p.  Jersey only did this with the 50p as no sets were produced for them in 1990.  Both produced sets for 1992, but they only included the new, smaller 10p.

I just checked Isle of Man 1990 sets and they didn't include a large 5p either.  St Helena-Ascension produced one dated 1991 for circulation, and the Falklands dated 1992 in sets and circulation.
