Chuuk to hold independence referendum

On 5 March 2019, Chuuk will hold an independence referendum. Chuuk is currently a state of Micronesia. It consists of 7 island groups and has 50,000 inhabitants. Micronesia acknowledges the referendum. It was originally planned for 2015.

Yeah I read about this recently - one of the islands has wanted independence for some time but now the entire state has gotten interested.

The independence referendum has been postponed until a later date that has yet to be determined. Before holding the referendum, the local government needs more time to look into the constitutional implications. They also want to educate the people better on the consequences of their choice in the referendum.

It's not complicated. Small island nations do badly. The smaller they are, the worse they do. The UN and OECD/DAC have created a separate class for small island nations in their poverty rankings. A vote for independence is a vote for increasing poverty and decreasing your chances of ever coming out of poverty.

The independence referendum is now sheduled for March 2020.
