This scarcer Pattern variety is without the angel head mintmark above the reverse floral wreath.

The iconic portrait of Helvetia is boldly rendered.


This particular issue comes from a small mintage of just 80 pieces.

The absence of the mintmark designates a strike at the Bern mint (as opposed to Brussels).

Edouard Durussel (1842-1888) was born in Switzerland.

He trained at the Royal Mint, London for three years.


He worked as an engraver in Paris from 1865-67.

In 1869 he returned to in Bern in Switzerland,.


There he established a die-sinking business, mainly producing medals.

This pattern for the gold 20 francs portrays a symbolic image of Liberty.

Made two posts in that topic about "interim" pieces, sort of: minor (prior) variations of the actually minted coins. When the Vreneli design was created, the artist initially designed a somewhat younger woman.
