Bashlik type Parthian drachm, Sellwood 10
« on: June 01, 2019, 12:37:57 PM »
This early Parthian drachm looks better than my last Sellwood 10 type. There are no markings in the field or in the exergue. And the lettering is a bit slipshod, it says ΑΣΑΚΥ instead of ΑΡΣΑΚΟΥ. When you look at the various pictures on Parthia.com and in books like Shore (nr. 15) and Wroth (pic 11), you often see slightly or not so slightly barbarous portraits on these drachms (Petrowicz has only two of this type and in the case of Sarfaraz, the pictures are unclear). Zeno: see 184327, 88084, 218190. But the portrait on my drachm (Zeno 212191) is not bad at all. What do you think?

I think this is a lovely borbarous specimen ! Could it be a fouree, or is it solid silver ?
The P in the name APΣAKOY i clearly missing. Have seen some contemporary specimen with a really minute o-micron, could be also the case here  ?
Unfortunately i lack sufficient knowledge on this category to give more specific pointers, but others will surely tune in.

It's solid silver. Looks good enough, but the design is a bit casual.
