Karim Khan, Double abbasi of 10 shahi, Resht, 1184 H
« on: May 03, 2019, 11:06:48 PM »
I recently acquired this piece, and though we have had similar abbasis posted, I don't think we have had a double abbasi yet.

Karim Khan Zand, 1759-1779 (1166-1193 H), Double abbasi of 10 shahi, Resht 1181 H, 9.18 gm, 24 mm, Album 2796.

According to Album this type was retarrifed as a 12 shahi in 1190.

Nice coin Alan, the date is " 1184 ۱۱۸۴ ", the last digit " 4 ۴ " is above the middle letter " Sh ش " of the word " Rasht رشت ". The mint is " Zarb dar al-Marz Rasht ضرب دارالمرز رشت ". On top of the the second photo is, "ya karim " یا کریم “, O Gracious One” (invoking an epithet of God, but alluding to Karim Khan). Your coin heading becomes:
Zands, Karim Khan, 1184 AH, AR 2-abbasi (8-shahi), Dar al-Marz Rasht mint (1172-1193 AH).

Coin collecting has a curious name. It is also called the "Hobby of Kings".

It was the opposite for me. I located the 4 immediately, but had trouble finding the 118. I guess the assistant engraver completing the date on the die decided there was no place for the final digit behind the rest of the date, so he simply put it somewhere else.

The finely woven decoration on this coin makes it stand out among its peers. A great addition to an already great index.

Yes, I hadn't noticed the 4 up there.

When I first read your posts I was a bit confused as I had read the stroke at the left edge of the little triangle to the right of the mint cartouche as the '1'. I knew it wasn't the edge of the square frame as the other three triangles don't have this edge.

I had noticed the '4' on the other side and thought you meant that the engraver had split the date over two different dies, but that '4' is presumably the abbreviation for 'Peace be upon him' that we have discussed before.
