Demetrius I Poliorcetes coin or fake?
« on: May 05, 2019, 11:13:57 AM »
Hello, guys. Yesterday I bought from e-bay two coins and the one that rang a bell in my head was with description "SUPERB EXTREMELY RARE ANCIENT GREEK SILVER TETRADRACHM DIMITRIOY.15.0 GR.29 MM"

I didn't found much information, but it looks like Demetrius I Poliorcetes coins. I saw some similar that look like it, but not really. Do you think this is one of Demetrius I coins?

Thank you in advance.

With regards,

Daniel

Hello Daniel, and welcome to WoC !

I do not want to be a party spoiler on your first post here, but the coin you bought looks really doubtfull  :-\.
To make it worse, it looks die identical to a published fake type, look here.

I do not know your level of experience with ancient coins, but e-bay is a dangerous place for novice collectors ! Better to stick with reputable dealers like those on vcoins. You need to have better knowledge that the seller to get good picks from e-bay.

Hello, THCoins and thank you for your help. Yes. After looking the photos, it looks exactly the same :(

I bought some gold and silver electrums from Cyprus before that too. I guess they are fake too. What a bad luck. Should have red more.

With regards,

Daniel

I assume it's from this seller?
ancientearth2006 | eBay

See this page;
fakesellers eBay

and their note -
ancientearth2006  (2018, August. Fake Pupienus, Vitellius, etc. Many genuine low-value copper, but most of the silver is fake.)
always willing to trade modern UK coins for modern coins from elsewhere....
