Chaghatayid AE fals, Khujanda 702 AH
« on: April 16, 2019, 02:46:03 PM »
If I already posted this, I am sorry. I couldn't find it. It is copper, 1.5 gram, around 20 mm. FWIW, I read 72 at 6 o'clock first picture.

The motif on the outer margin of the reverse immediately reminded me Mamluks.
By the date 72x, it fell into Muhammad I period but couldn't find an exact match. I don't have Mamluks by Balog but would be good to check that!

similar motif on of his coins

That's tough.  Still looking but the closest I've seen is a Cilician Armenia from around 1100 AD.  Sorry, still looking.

I have a medium useful copy of Balog, useful because the plates are intact, medium because all Arabic writing and letters with a diacritical mark are replaced by hashes. I think Mamluk is an excellent guess, but the 72 is either not the date or the end, rather than the beginning of the date. Balog lists only one coin (180) in the 720s, which, as far as I can tell, because it is not illustrated, is quite different.

Checked dates 672 (Balog 88) and 772 (Balog 408). No luck.

I have learned that the lower picture should be turned 90 clockwise, though.

Identified on Zeno as Chaghatayid AE fals, Khujanda (Khujend) 702 or 703 AH.

Side note: Khujend was known as Leninabad 1936-1992. It is an old and important city, but the only remaining tourist spot is the regional museum, which is so small that almost all its assets can be exhibited. ;)

The successors of Chagatai ruled over what is now Uzbekistan, so I am HAPPY!
