Already the round pound seems to belong to ancient history. It's strange to remember that Jersey issued two large series of round pounds: the parish series of the 1980s, of which there were 12 in the set, and the ship series of the 1990s, of which there were 7 in the set (6 ships and one related seal).

Apparently the first set was very popular with collectors, and so Jersey commissioned a second set, this time of ships. Visitors to Jersey will know that the locals do not like pound coins and prefer their Jersey 1 pound notes. Most pound coins that circulate there are UK coins. When I was there in the year 2000, I received only two Jersey round pounds in change, both of them from the ship series. It is clear, then, that Jersey did indeed issue these coins chiefly for collectors, since most locals did not like them.

Here is the 1983 Jersey round pound, celebrating the parish of St. Helier, where the capital of Jersey is located.

In some years two different round pounds were issued. Here I will show only one more, the Brelade issue for 1984.

The coin looks nice in proof condition. Remember, however, that these were small coins, and they quickly became scratched and discoloured. When Jersey asked the Royal Mint for a set of ship round pound designs in 1989, the Royal Mint tried to persuade Jersey that the larger 2 pound coins would be more suitable for the purpose. However, Jersey insisted.

Here is a reminder of the ship series. Click on the link below to see some of the original sketches for the series and the thinking behind it:

It is strange to think that Jersey will not repeat this exercise with the new bimetallic pound coins. I know that there are many xenophobic British Brexiteer types who refuse to collect anything that is not British-related, and they would surely welcome such a set.

I, too, find it very strange that Jersey isn't milking this ''cow.''
Perhaps, their state treasury is so full that they don't need to...
