Pobjoy Mint has won a tender for the production of 2019-dated 10p and 20p coins. The reverse designs will be the same as on the current coins.

Below the amended coins of the Falkland Islands that have so far been announced this year can be seen. The Royal Mint is no longer the exclusive supplier of Falkland Islands coins. Instead, the government of the Falkland Islands currently each time holds a tender as soon as stock of a certain denomination needs to be increased. 2019-dated coins of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p have so far been announced. There was also a shortage of 50p coins but that has been solved by minting 200,000 of the 2018-dated commemorative penguin 50p coins that were first issued last year. So far no 1 pound or 2 pounds coins are planned for production in 2019 either.

The 2019-dated 5p coin will be produced at Tower Mint because of which it depicts a different portrait than the other coins, which will be produced at Pobjoy Mint. The 5p coin is also the only denomination on which a new reverse design was introduced. On the other coins only very minor changes were made to the current reverse designs.

The 1p, 2p and 5p coins are now in circulation on the islands. The minted 1p coin does not look good.

I contacted seller from Falkland Islands (I bought from him Penguins 50p series few months ago) - also 5p has been already released, he wait for 2p for the moment and for the new 10&20p but the last two will be avaliable not before 2020 (even with the date 2019 on the coins).

The 5 pence coin, the only coin in the new series that was made by Tower Mint, does not look good either.

Who on earth decided that ordering coins from different Mints was a good idea?  The 5p has a different portrait and no beading, and the the date on the obverse.  All of them have "Falkland Islands" on both sides, which is completely unnecessary.  I usually try and keep on top of circulation issues but I'm really not interested in acquiring these.  It's such a shame.  At over 45 years, the Falklands had the oldest series of reverse designs still in use on any sterling/pound-at-par coinage but they're now spoilt.

I seriously hope Jersey and Guernsey don't go the same way, but their more recent commemoratives suggest they might do if they ever produce standard circulating coinage again.

Later this year the Falkland Islands will hold a tender for all circulating coin production which will be awarded to 1 mint so likely from 2020 we will have a consistent coin series of the Falkland Islands again.

Pobjoy Mint has won the tender for all circulating coin production of the Falkland Islands. This means that the 2019-dated 5p coin produced at Tower Mint will remain a 1-year-type only.

The 2021-dated 50p coin of the Falkland Islands, minted at the Pobjoy Mint, has now been released into circulation locally. It is now available on Falkland Collectibles.
