Zimbabwe: New 2 dollar coin

My source is impeccable. NGO executive who had just returned from Zimbabwe and had personally spoken with DPO Zimbabwe top level staff. Web site linked to above confirms his story. DPO Kenya web site confirms they are all over Africa. Once again, you should not compare India and Zimbabwe and allow for facts on the ground.

Specimens of the new coin and banknote will be circulated as of today to get the public used to them ahead of their launch. I have not come across any photos yet and as this is Africa, my expectations of getting to see them any time soon aren't very high.

I had never heard about the Zimbabwe Mint before. I doubt it was successful.

The 2 dollar coin that will be issued is a bond coin.  It will be bi-metal, the outer ring being copper-nickel plated and the inner core being aluminium-bronze plated. On its obverse it depicts the letters RBZ and the date 2018, on its reverse the words Two Dollar Bond Coin and the numeral and symbol $. The rim will have a serrated profile with a groove and edge lettering.

The 2 dollar bond coin will be released into general circulation starting next Monday. It will circulate alongside the 2 dollar bond note.

It closed down soon after opening.
It did mint Zimbabwe coins for some period.

I have the feeling that the new $2 bond coin will be very similar in size and weight to 5 Rand of South Africa and 1000 shillings from Uganda...

I am glad that after no less than 4 days after the first coins were handed to the public, we finally have images. It doesn't beat the record of stupidity set by the media in Kenya though where they sent a news crew to court to broadcast live on television the verdict of the judges in the currency case, only to stop broadcasting after 5 minutes, before the judges had mentioned their decision.

Anyway, I find the coins look strange. Way too many latent images because of which it does not look good. I also do not understand why it had to be bimetallic and had to have so many security features. The piece is only worth 0.5 euro cent.

Perhaps when they were being ordered the value was still supposed to equal 2 USD.

The plural "dollar" is interesting too. Yes, I understand that, if you use a term such as "two dollar bill" (or in this case "two dollar bond coin"), you leave the S out. But it still looks strange to me ...

Talking about "strange", what I do not quite understand is: If these are the brand new coins which are to replace the RTGS dollar, why would they be dated 2018?
