Tongzhi 10 cash Hartill #22.1129
« on: January 10, 2019, 07:04:28 PM »
A friend of mine owns this coin, which seems to be #22.1129. Do you think it is authentic? And if so, what is the approximate value? There are some forums that don't allow for asking value so if that's the case here feel free to ignore that part.  I am interested in it as I don't own any higher denomination cash and he is willing to sell to me.

What is the diameter?    These were copied in their own day extensively, and also made smaller and with reduced quality officially.    The coin has too little value to collectors to have reproductions of the circulation type made now for the numismatic market.   However his specimen looks recast, and anything is liable to be copied for the tourist market.   It has no wholesale value, really.   Retail a few bucks.

Original pieces range from 29.7 to 31.8mm.     That is from a 1968 Japanese catalog, which shows rarity levels.     At that time the type apparently was scarce enough to make numismatic copies.    I also found that I have some fakes tossed in with junk.    This is a copy, made in the original way, but using an original piece for a pattern, aka its seed coin or mother cash.    Possibly done twice.   The surface polishing (or wear) looks normal, where modern copies are left semi-rough.
