Netherlands: Bullion 2015
« on: March 26, 2015, 03:56:17 PM »
I already wrote about it half a year ago but unfortunately that topic went missing.

In 2015 the Netherlands will launch it's own bullion coins. Now I have some more details about these coins.
About the designs following details are known:

Obverse: Portrait of the king with "Willem Alexander koning der Nederlanden"  (Willem Alexander king of the Netherlands).
Reverse: Crowned coat of arms of the Netherlands with date, fineness mark, mint and mintmaster marks

Coins in the following denominations will be minted:

2.50 euro  - Silver (.999) - 31.1 grams - 37 mm
25 euro - Gold (.999) - 3.1 grams - 16 mm
50 euro - Gold (.999) - 7.8 grams - 22 mm
100 euro - Gold (.999) - 15.5 grams - 28 mm
250 euro - Gold (.999) - 31.1 grams - 37 mm

All coins have a reeded edge.

The project has been postponed. A design that didn't make it can be seen below.

The project has been postponed.

Reason? Financial trouble?

Also, why are (were) they dated 2014 and not 2015?

Probably the financial trouble, the coin is dated 2014 as the designing competition usually is being held 1 year before issuance.

The Dutch government will soon officially cancel its plans for the issuance of bullion coins. In 2015 the government changed the Coinage Act to make the issuance of bullion coins possible. This as it identified a demand for such coins of people who wanted to invest in precious metals. Ever since not a single bullion coin has been minted and therefore the Dutch government feels there is no real need anymore for there to be a possibility to issue such coins. Therefore it has proposed that the changes made in 2015 will be reversed.
