Alexander I Balas countermark real?
« on: December 22, 2018, 12:13:49 PM »
Hi I bought a couple of of overpolished coins, only some patina left on the rim
they are both brass coins, of which I wonder if they are supposed to be brass

it is 12 mm about 6 grms
it has a branch countermark, anybody know what this stands for?
regards Derek

Difficult to say in this state whether this is a true of fake coin. It looks like Houghton 441 from Apamea. These commonly seem to have countermarks. Your photo is to small to judge the marking. I know of other Seleukids which have an anchor in a rectangular countermark.
