Rewa ?
« on: December 20, 2018, 01:45:58 PM »
I have had this for many years identified as KM 14, 2 paisa from Rewa, but when scanning it today I compared it to the illustrations in SAC and now I am doubtful. 6.59 gm, 27 mm. Obviously it is overstrck on an earlier coin, but can anyone give me a firm attribution?

It looks rather typical of an Afghan  multi-struck civic copper to me, I have a few very similar, here is one where the flan is concave, is yours? This makes me wonder why it would be that way and perhaps it was restruck on something other than a hard surface

The undertype might be possibly Afghan, but the overtype appears to be two nagari or similar letters on each side (complicated by the fact that the 'reverse' looks as if it might have been double-struck). The coin is actually thinner in the centre than at the edge, which suggests the dies were slightly domed.

Vic's coin proves mine is not Rewa (as I'd suspected on looking at SAC) because his reverse is definitely arabic/persian, 'zarb rewa' or similar.

Any other ideas gratefully received!

Alan
