Corsican Republic 4 soldi Pasquale Paoli - Fake?
« on: December 08, 2018, 08:02:34 AM »
Dear Experts, I recently bought the attached coin but when received the coin has gone black vs. the reference pics. Having paid USD 250 I was keen to ensure this is genuine.

Unfortunately Im traveling and dont have its weight and diameter and was hoping you could help urgently.

Many thanks

Date is 1762. On the other side, in the cartouche, is a head, symbol of Corsica. I don't see any indications on your photo that it is a fake.

This a a low silver content coin. Such coins were known as "black money", as they became black quickly. Good silver coins were known as "white money". Presumably, the silver was driven to the surface, where it oxidised quickly, forming a black layer. It is useless to clean the coin. You will be left with a copper coin.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
