Bhutan 50-chhertum coin 1979
« on: December 04, 2018, 05:34:36 PM »
This has been niggling at me for years. One side of this beautifully designed coin has what at first sight to be a painted surface. If so then it has been masterfully done because no paint has touched the wall of the rim, it's also resistant to any solvent that I can lay my hands on. It does appear that Cu-Ni colouration is showing through on the lettering but that is just the lighting. It's a shame because the coin seems to be a proof.

It may be varnish.
Try acetone.

Tried it, didn't work. Neither did petrol, paint stripper or methylated spirit. It's weird.

Soda.
But it hurts the surface.

Thanks, but it goes back in the drawer for another few years

Correct solution.
Tomorrow I will show my similar coin (Mongolia).
I have this coin for many years too. I even forgot about the existence of such a coin. :)
Yes, I tried to clean this coin with soda.
